The Guard's Federal Mission

As an integral part of the military of the United States, the Washington National Guard fulfills it's commitment by:

  • Providing trained military units for national defense
  • Augmenting federal military operations, on a continuous and voluntary basis

The Guard's State Mission

As a state agency, the National Guard supports the goals of our Commander- in-Chief, the Governor, and adds value to our communities and our nation in many ways:

  • Public Safety:
The Guard helps protect citizens, their property and the environment on a 24-hour per day basis from the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) The State EOC aids local emergency responders by coordinating search and rescue operations, wild fire mobilization, environmental responses and other emergencies. The National Guard Counter-Drug Task Force also aids local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to reduce drug-related crimes in the state.

  • Education:
The Guard's Counter-Drug Task Force is helping to make schools safer by promoting drug-free lifestyles and reducing drug-related crime in the schools. The Guard also has excellent tuition assistance programs, which make education more accessible and fosters continuing education for all of its members. Many Guard members also receive training and develop expertise in high technology systems, which they bring to the workplace in their full-time jobs, to help Washington's families, communities and businesses thrive in the high-tech, global economy of the 21st Century.

  • Economic Vitality:
The National Guard promotes economic vitality in the state in many ways. First, traditional guard members are high-quality, effective employees and business owners who make significant contributions, in their full-time jobs, to the economic success of business and government in Washington. Also, the significant financial impact of the Guard is felt in every county through 43 locations statewide. Substantial federal and state funding, supporting National Guard military, counter-drug, emergency management, construction and maintenance programs, is infused into our communities where it turns over seven to eight times and generates additional tax revenues for the communities and the state.

  • The Environment:
The Washington National Guard is a model of good stewardship, protecting the environment on their state properties and other joint use properties. The State EOC, operated by the Guard on a 24-hour basis, aids State and local agencies responding to environmental emergencies.

  • Restoring Public:
Trust in Government: The National Guard enjoys high regard and wide public support in Washington. The military culture, which places a high value on service and ethical behavior, has enabled the National Guard to become a leader in the Governor's initiative to make state government as innovative, efficient, and customer-friendly as the best private enterprises in our state.
