The National Guard, the oldest component of the Armed Forces of the United States, traces its origins directly to the militias of the first English colonies. With its oldest units dating back to 1636, the National Guard is one of the oldest institutions in the United States; it has fought in every American war since 1637. The “Minutemen” who began the Revolutionary War were recruited from the Massachusetts militia, and the militia played a key role in winning American independence. The U.S. Constitution created the National Guard’s unique dual status, with control of the Guard resting with the state Governors, unless called to active service by the President.
The Washington National Guard’s history began in 1853, when President Fillmore signed the Organic Act creating the Washington Territory. Major Isaac Stevens was appointed the first governor and commander-in-chief of the Territorial Militia.
