The Village Model Program
[Return to DEFY Camp 99] [DDR Program]
(This information was prepared by the Washington Health Foundation's Resource Center)
The Village Model program is designed to bring support to youth within a school by establishing a partnership between youth, business and adult communities. The model seeks to address concerns through mutual interest and the sharing of existing strengths. As of June 1999, two schools in the Tacoma area are participating in the program: Lincoln High School and Foss High School. Within each high school two advisors work with students as community organizers, the students in turn work with elementary and middle (or "feeder") school students. Activities thus far have included: informal discussions regarding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD), mentoring and role modeling, a March Against Drugs in April of this year and two policy forums. One of the forums involved participation in the White House Leadership Summit at which President Clinton addressed Village Model participants and others. A successful safer school zone campaign resulted in a nearby school pawn shop, stopping the advertisement of guns.
